Galactic Cosmochronometry from Radioactive Elements in the Spectra of Very Old Metal-poor Stars

چکیده
In a short review of neutron-capture elemental abundances in Galactic halo stars, emphasis is placed on the use of these elements to estimate the age of the Galactic halo. Two prominent characteristics of neutron-capture elements in halo stars are their large star-to-star scatter in the overall abundance level with respect to lighter elements, and the dominance of r-process abundance patterns at lowest stellar metallicities. The r-process abundance signature potentially allows the direct determination of the age of the earliest Galactic halo nucle-osynthesis events, but further developments in r-process theory, high resolution spectroscopy of very metal-poor stars, and in basic atomic data are needed to narrow the uncertainties in age estimates. Attention is brought to the importance of accurate transition probabilities in neutron-capture element cosmochronometry. Recent progress in the transition probabilities of rare earth elements is discussed, along with suggestions for future work on other species. – 2 –

Neutron-Capture Element Abundances and Cosmochronometry
Abundance ratios of radioactive to stable neutron-capture elements in very metal-poor stars may be used to estimate the age of our Galaxy. But extracting accurate ages from these data requires continuing work on many fronts: a) identification of more low metallicity stars with neutron-capture element excesses; b) acquisition of the best high resolution stellar spectra; c) improvement in neutron...
متن کاملThe Age of the Galaxy from Thorium Cosmochronometry
The long-lived radioactive element thorium can potentially provide a simple and direct clock to determine the age of our Galaxy. Spectroscopic investigations of thorium in metal-poor stars have yielded some promising initial results. We discuss the major observational and theoretical limitations in thorium cosmochronometry, and point out the ways in which the implied Galactic ages from thorium ...

The abundance patterns of metal-poor stars provide us a wealth of chemical information about various stages of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. In particular, these stars allow us to study the formation and evolution of the elements and the involved nucleosynthesis processes. This knowledge is invaluable for our understanding of the cosmic chemical evolution and the onset of starand galaxy...
متن کاملChemical composition of extremely metal-poor stars in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy
Context. Individual stars in dwarf spheroidal galaxies around the Milky Way Galaxy have been studied both photometrically and spectroscopically. Extremely metal-poor stars among them are very valuable because they should record the early enrichment in the Local Group. However, our understanding of these stars is very limited because detailed chemical abundance measurements are needed from high ...

Observations of metal-poor Galactic halo stars indicate that the abundance pattern of the (heaviest) neutron-capture elements is consistent with the scaled solar system r-process abundances. Utilizing the radioactive (r-process) element thorium, age determinations have been made for several of these same stars, placing constraints on both Galactic and cosmological age estimates.
